A mellow beach-break piecing together short rides on the Atlantic coast of Buenos Aires province, Monte Hermoso's El Espigón works best on SE swell with mid to high tide, when the sandbars near the west pier stack up enough to produce punchy, if brief, peaks. Offshore conditions arrive the morning after a Sudestada event, with NW winds holding the face clean before the wind clocks around by mid-morning. Low tide exposes a rockier bottom and shrinks the wave noticeably, so timing your session around the incoming tide matters. Best suited to intermediate and beginner surfers looking for an uncrowded paddle-out without localism pressure. Bottom: sand over occasional rock. Season: austral summer. Consistency: low, swell is infrequent along this stretch of coast. SE swell brings a cross-shore current running east to west, so expect to walk back up the beach between sets and watch your position relative to the pier.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

One of the least crowded stretches on the Buenos Aires coast. Weekdays you may have the lineup to yourself, weekends might bring 10-15 surfers spread along the beach. There is essentially no localism. The west pier area tends to concentrate the break and the surfers, so spread out if the crowd tightens.

Access & Facilities

Monte Hermoso is roughly 100km southwest of Bahía Blanca via Route 3. Street parking near the beach is safe and free. The town has basic amenities including food and accommodation. Water is Atlantic cold in winter, milder in summer, so a wetsuit is advisable outside the peak summer months.

Nearby Alternatives

If Monte Hermoso is flat, the broader Buenos Aires province coastline offers more consistent options to the north toward Mar del Plata, where larger swell windows and more established beach-breaks provide better odds of surf. Pehuen-Có, a short drive west, is worth a check on SE swell for a change of scenery.
