A jetty-assisted right-hander in Mar del Plata, La Pepita is one of several groyne breaks along the city's bay that can line up into a legitimate tube on a solid SE swell. Mid tide is the sweet spot: too low and it gets sucked dry, too high and the shape flattens. Westerly winds groom the face. Size range runs 2-10ft, but the better sessions tend to cluster in the 4-6ft window when the SE has some punch and the banks are cooperating. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find it worth the paddle, though be prepared for a packed lineup on any decent day. Bad vibes have been reported when it's good. Bottom: sand with jetty influence. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: medium. If you arrive and it's crowded with aggression in the air, the same swell will be lighting up other groyne breaks along the bay within walking distance.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

On any quality day, La Pepita draws a dense crowd from Mar del Plata's large surf population. Localism is a real factor here, not a rumour. Intermediate visiting surfers should respect the pecking order, wait their turn, and read the room. Dawn patrol before the beach fills up is the practical move.

Access & Facilities

Car parking is available nearby and there are public restrooms at the beach. Some residential pollution has been noted in the bay, so check conditions after heavy rain. The jetty itself is a hazard to be aware of during larger swells and if caught inside.

Nearby Alternatives

If La Pepita is maxed out or the vibe is hostile, La Popular, Sunrider, Cardiel, and Estrada are all groyne breaks along the same stretch of bay responding to similar swell and wind. Playa Grande to the north offers more consistent beachbreak peaks across multiple breaks and generally a wider spread of surfers.
