A reliable right-hander breaking alongside a pier on La Perla beach, the northern stretch of Mar del Plata, Puerto Cardiel is one of the better waves in this part of Argentina. SE swells push clean lines along the sandbar, and the pier provides a useful reference point for positioning in the lineup. Offshore NW, W, or SW winds keep the face tidy, while low to incoming tide is when the wave runs best. Size tops out around 6ft on a solid swell, with chest-high to a couple of feet overhead being the sweet spot. Intermediates will feel right at home, though shortboarders and longboarders both find something here. Summer pulls heavy crowds, both surfers and beach tourists, making the lineup competitive. Bottom: Sand. Season: March-April and October-December. Consistency: Good within season. Dawn patrol or a midweek session outside of summer holidays is the move to find breathing room.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Summer months bring real pressure here, both from the local surf community and the general beach crowd that fills La Perla. Localism is manageable but can tighten when the peak is stacked. Autumn and spring sessions, especially midweek at dawn, will find the lineup far more relaxed. Respect the rotation and you'll be fine most of the year.

Access & Facilities

Parking is directly in front of the wave at beach level, making access straightforward. Mar del Plata is a large city, so food, water, and surf shops are close by. Water quality is rated fair, so check local conditions after heavy rain. No serious paddle-out hazards aside from other surfers during peak season.

Nearby Alternatives

La Perla beach stretches for several kilometres with multiple sandbars and small points, so if Cardiel is maxed or too crowded a short walk or drive north often reveals quieter peaks. The broader Mar del Plata coastline also offers several reef and point setups that respond to similar SE swells.
