A sandbank at the entrance of Mar del Plata's commercial port stacks swell energy against the south breakwater, producing a powerful right-hander that ranks among Argentina's premier big-wave options. NE through S swells funnel in with full force, and the wave works across all tides, though it fires rarely given the narrow swell and size window. Offshore winds from the NW groom the face. At 10-15ft this wave is for experienced surfers only, not a place to learn under pressure from shipping traffic and commercial port activity. Bottom: sandbank over hard substrate. Season: swell-dependent, low consistency. Consistency: low. Pollution is a real factor given the commercial port environment, avoid the water after heavy rain or visible discharge. Seals are a regular presence in the lineup and will follow you through your ride, which is entertaining until it isn't, stay aware of your surroundings.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are occasional rather than constant, partly because the wave is rare and partly because big ships navigating the port entrance are a genuine deterrent. When it does go off, expect experienced surfers who know the spot. Give way to commercial vessel traffic, this is a working port.

Access & Facilities

Parking is available nearby. A surf shop is in the area for equipment needs. The port environment means pollution levels can be significant, check conditions before paddling out. The south end of Playa Grande is the broader zone, with calmer, more accessible alternatives nearby.

Nearby Alternatives

When Escollera Sur is too big or flat, Playa Grande to the north offers consistent beachbreaks across multiple skill levels. The Cabo Corrientes area and the various jetty setups around Mar del Plata provide plenty of fallback options depending on swell size and wind direction.
