A punchy reef and beach combo sitting below cliff-lined shores between Mar del Plata and Miramar, Las Cuevas (La Popular) delivers a-frame peaks with both left and right options depending on where you set up. The spot picks up NE through S swells and fires best in the 4-8ft range with NW offshores grooming the faces. Mid-range and larger SE swells can hollow out the rights considerably, rewarding surfers who can handle a fast, shallow take-off. The crowd shows up intermittently, and while it's not a circus, it draws a competent local crew who know the reef well. Intermediate to advanced surfers will feel at home here. Bottom: reef and beach mix. Season: April through September. Consistency: medium. Come at dawn when the NW wind is clean before onshores fill in, and give the locals their pick of the sets. Water temp drops into wetsuit territory through winter, so bring a 4/3 at minimum for the colder months.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are intermittent but the lineup has an established local crew. This is not a beginner's free-for-all. Paddle out with some ability, wait your turn in the rotation, and don't snake sets. Dawn patrol during winter weekdays will generally be your least pressured window.

Access & Facilities

There is a carpark nearby, though facilities are minimal on site. The cliffs define the landscape here and frame the paddle-out. Water quality has a residential pollution rating, so check conditions after heavy rain. Urchins and shallow reef sections are the main physical hazards.

Nearby Alternatives

Heading north toward Mar del Plata opens up Playa Grande and Cabo Corrientes, both offering more consistent options with better infrastructure. South toward Miramar, El Muelle handles larger S swells and is worth checking when size is up.
