A point break on the northwest coast of La Union, Philippines, San Juan delivers punchy right-handers that pick up South China Sea swells funneling into the bay. It needs NW to NE swell in the 5-6ft range to come alive, with offshore winds from the east keeping faces clean. Rides are short on average, under 50m, but on a solid day the point stretches to 100m-plus of workable wall. Intermediate surfers will get the most from it, beginners can paddle out in smaller surf, but when the swell builds past 8ft the wave becomes fast and demanding. Works across all tides, though weekdays see far fewer surfers in the lineup than weekends, when it draws a real crowd. Bottom: sand over reef. Season: October through March. Consistency: moderate to good during peak season. Come on a weekday dawn patrol and you'll share it with a fraction of the weekend mob.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekend crowds are real here. Locals, expats based at the surf resorts, and visiting surfers from Manila all converge on a relatively short break. Weekday mornings are significantly quieter. Respect the lineup, wait your turn on the peak, and you'll be fine. Localism is moderate at worst.

Access & Facilities

Bus from Manila to San Fernando (La Union) takes 6-8 hours depending on traffic. Partas buses are a reliable option and drop you close to San Juan. From San Fernando, a trike or jeepney completes the transfer. Multiple surf resorts and hostels line the beachfront. Keep gear secured at accommodation, petty theft has been reported at several properties along the strip. Food, water, and board rentals are all available locally.

Nearby Alternatives

When San Juan is blown out or maxed, the coastline north toward Cabugao offers less-exposed options. Around 2.5 hours up the coast, the town of Cabugao, Brgy Sabang, hosts a more powerful right-hander that handles bigger swells and sees far fewer surfers. Worth scouting if you have a vehicle and time.
