A reef break on the north coast of Tenerife that punches above its weight on winter NW groundswell, Fuera de la Bajeta sits just south of Punta del Hidalgo, roughly 6 miles from La Laguna. NW swell with E offshore winds is the target combo, with the spot handling a mix of groundswell and windswell in the 3-8ft range. Mid-tide tends to smooth out the sections and keeps the shallower reef sections manageable. Intermediates will find it accessible when it's not pushing overhead, but the exposed reef and rip currents mean you need to know your limits and read the water before paddling out. Bottom: reef. Season: winter (Nov-Feb). Consistency: moderate, heavily dependent on swell angle. Conditions here are comparable to nearby El Charco but less demanding overall, so if you're working up to that wave, this is a logical step.
On good winter days this spot draws a crowd and local surfers can be territorial. Dawn patrol is the obvious move. Respect the pecking order, don't snake sets, and keep your vibe quiet. Traveling surfers who show patience and give respect typically have a smoother time.
The spot is accessible from the Punta del Hidalgo road on the northern tip of Tenerife. Rocky shoreline means you need solid footwear for the entry and exit. Watch rip currents along the reef edges, use them to get out if you know what you're doing, but they can pull you wide quickly. No major facilities at the break itself, stock up in La Laguna or the nearby villages before heading out.
El Charco is the closest alternative with a similar NW swell window but a step up in intensity. When the north coast is blown out or too big, the south coast of Tenerife picks up S and SW swells and tends to stay cleaner in trade-wind conditions.
