Black volcanic sand and punchy beach peaks define Playa de Nogales, sitting on the NE coast of La Palma in the Canary Islands near Puntallana. The spot responds best to N swell in winter, shifting to NW windows through summer, working across a range of 3-8ft with multiple peaks breaking along the crescent bay. Strong rip currents run consistently here, making this unsuitable for anyone below advanced level regardless of wave size. Bottom: sand over volcanic base. Season: year-round, winter peaks most consistent. Consistency: moderate, size-dependent. Plan around high tide for longer rides and check current lines before paddling out. The 500m rocky approach from the car park filters out casual visitors, which explains why the lineup stays uncrowded even on good days. A surfers' wooden hut at the back of the beach has rental gear if you need it. Santa Cruz de La Palma is roughly 25 minutes south.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This place stays quiet. The access walk and strong currents discourage beginners and day-trippers, so on most swells you will share peaks with a handful of surfers at most. Respect the locals who know the current channels, follow their lead on entry and exit points.

Access & Facilities

Reach the beach via Puntallana, about 25 minutes from Santa Cruz de La Palma. The 500m walk across rocky coastal terrain is manageable but wear footwear. Board rentals are available from the wooden hut at the beach. No major food vendors on site, bring water. Watch for submerged rocks near the shoreline on low tide.

Nearby Alternatives

When Nogales is maxed out or the currents are unmanageable, the sheltered black-sand beaches closer to Santa Cruz de La Palma pick up smaller NE swell and offer calmer conditions. La Palma's west coast sees occasional SW groundswell in winter if you are willing to explore.
