A compact black-sand cove tucked beneath the Anaga cliffs northeast of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Playa de las Gaviotas delivers punchy beach break peaks when winter S-SE swells push into the bay. Optimal conditions require NW offshore winds and a solid S-SE swell in the 3-6ft range, with mid tide generally cleaning up the shore break. The spot draws a tight-knit local crew of surfers and bodyboarders, visiting surfers are welcome but should read the lineup and defer accordingly. Bottom: sand over volcanic base. Season: October through March. Consistency: low to moderate, needs a focused swell event to switch on. The cliff access road off TF-121 toward Igueste is narrow and demands care, particularly in a standard rental car, so arrive early to manage both the drive and the parking reality. The beach has traditionally been a nudist spot, so keep that in mind and be respectful of whoever is already there when you paddle up the beach.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is a local patch. The regular crew is small but consistent, and they know every peak intimately. Arrive with humility, take your turn, and you will have no issues. Weekends in winter can see the lineup fill quickly given the limited takeoff zones. Dawn sessions mid-week are the sensible move.

Access & Facilities

Follow TF-121 from Santa Cruz toward Igueste de San Andrés, past Playa de las Teresitas. The descent to the cove is steep and narrow. There are no facilities: no bathrooms, no food, no rentals. Bring water, snacks, and sun protection. The volcanic cliffs provide shade later in the day but offer no shelter from wind. Urchins exist on the rocky margins of the cove, so avoid those edges.

Nearby Alternatives

When Gaviotas is flat or blown out, Playa de las Teresitas is minutes away but is an artificial beach with imported Saharan sand and rarely breaks with any quality. For proper surf, the northeast coast around Punta del Hidalgo offers exposed reef and beach options that pick up similar S-SE swells and can be worth the 30-minute drive when the swell has juice.
