A small sandy bay tucked beneath cliffs at the northern tip of Lanzarote, Playa de la Canteria offers a surprisingly versatile beachbreak for its compact size. A central peak fires on NW to NE swell at mid to high tide, with the bay developing a more defined left as the tide pushes higher. On the eastern edge, a right-hander peels along the rocks at high tide, delivering fast and occasionally hollow sections. Swells over 6ft close the bay out, so this is a spot that rewards patience for the right window, ideally 2-5ft with a SW offshore cleaning things up. Beginners and intermediates will find it manageable most of the time, though it draws crowds when conditions align. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: high. Ferries to Isla Graciosa depart nearby, so the parking area can fill quickly on weekends.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This spot pulls surfers from across northern Lanzarote when conditions cooperate. Weekends and school holidays can make the compact lineup feel tight. Localism is not a major reported issue, but a small bay concentrates the crowd. Dawn sessions during peak season are the sensible move.

Access & Facilities

A car park sits above the bay. No facilities on-site, so bring water and snacks. The road to the northern tip is straightforward from Orzola. The ferry terminal for Isla Graciosa is metres away, which means foot traffic through the area is consistent.

Nearby Alternatives

When Canteria closes out, Famara beach to the southwest offers 6km of beachbreak peaks handling a wider swell and wind range. Las Bajas reef in the Famara bay is an option for more experienced surfers chasing a proper reef setup.
