A six-kilometre arc of dark volcanic sand on Lanzarote's northwest coast, Famara is one of the Canary Islands' most consistent beach breaks, hoovering up North Atlantic swell from NW and N directions. Best size runs waist-high to overhead, with the middle of the bay offering the most exposed and powerful peaks. SE and S winds groom the faces cleanly. Beginners and surf schools cluster near the village end, while experienced surfers push toward the more exposed central peaks as size and power increase. All tides work, though rips strengthen considerably as the swell builds past head-high. Bottom: sand with a reef shelf near the village. Season: year-round, with December through February the standout winter window. Consistency: very consistent, around 150 surf days per year. Saharan wind events can turn the beach into a sandblasting experience, so check the forecast before committing to a full day session.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are manageable. Weekends draw crowds, and peak winter season compresses the lineup further. The local crew is competitive but the welcome is reasonable compared to tighter spots on the island. The beach is long enough that spreading out is always an option. Respect the surf school zones near the village, and do not drop in on the local crew working the better banks.

Access & Facilities

Large public car park directly in front of the beach. Surf shops and rental gear available in Famara village. Food options in the village. Hazards include strong rips, particularly as size increases, plus rocks near the village end. Saharan wind events combine brutal gusts with airborne sand, a genuine hazard for eyes and equipment.

Nearby Alternatives

When Famara is blown out or too big, San Juan offers a more sheltered option. La Santa is worth the drive when conditions align, with quality reef setups nearby, though respect local protocols strictly at any reef breaks in the area.
