A raw, exposed beachbreak on Fuerteventura's remote southwest coast, Playa de Cofete demands respect before it delivers anything rideable. It needs a SW to N swell window, 3-6ft, and ideally sirocco or glassy conditions to clean up the typically wind-blown, messy surface. The beach suffers from heavy longshore drift and powerful rips that make it genuinely dangerous for solo sessions. Intermediates comfortable reading currents can find peaky, shifting peaks when conditions align, but this place is never a crowd. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through winter for swell consistency. Consistency: medium. Never surf here alone, and treat the rips as a real hazard, not a minor footnote.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

You will almost certainly have it to yourself, which is both the appeal and the warning. The isolation means no backup if something goes wrong. The rips and longshore drift are serious, and the sand reportedly swallows vehicles too. Go with at least one other surfer and agree on an exit plan before paddling out.

Access & Facilities

Cofete is a long drive over a rough track from Morro Jable, passable in a high-clearance vehicle but notorious for catching out rental cars. Parking is free but the sand around the beach is unstable. There are zero facilities. Bring water, food, and a full tank of fuel. The remoteness is the point, but plan accordingly.

Nearby Alternatives

If Cofete is too messy, the more sheltered beachbreaks closer to Morro Jable pick up similar swell with better wind protection from the surrounding cliffs. The consistent reef setups on the island's north coast fire when big NW swells arrive and offer far more reliable quality for travelling intermediates.
