A sand-bottom beachbreak at the southern tip of Gran Canaria, Maspalomas delivers short, punchy peaks when the Atlantic delivers enough swell to wake it up. Needs at least 5-6ft of open-ocean NW to W swell to get going, with light offshore winds from the NE. Mid tide is the sweet spot. Most days it sits flat or offers marginal ankle-to-knee surf, so arrival expectations should be calibrated accordingly. Works best in the winter months when North Atlantic groundswells push south. Bottom: sand. Season: Nov-Mar. Consistency: low to moderate. Plan around swell forecasts and have a backup island destination in mind, because flat spells here can stretch for weeks. A beach read and a rental car are as essential as your board.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are largely empty and weekends attract only a handful of surfers. Localism is not reported as an issue. The bigger crowd pressure is from beachgoers and tourists who share the broad sandy coastline, not from territorial surfers.

Access & Facilities

Reach the break by car or taxi to the Maspalomas lighthouse area. The broader Maspalomas resort zone has full facilities: hotels, restaurants, water, and board hire nearby. No exposed rock hazards on the paddle-out, but watch for shore dump on bigger days.

Nearby Alternatives

If Maspalomas is flat, the east-facing spots in the north of Gran Canaria pick up more consistent NE swells. The other Canary Islands, particularly Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, offer more exposed coastline and higher consistency when groundswells are running.
