A dark lava ledge on the southern tip of Tenerife, La Izquierda throws up one of the Canaries' most consistent and demanding lefts at Playa de Las Americas. W to NW swells, ideally from 3-8ft, strike the reef at a critical angle and produce a sucky take-off over shallow lava before uncoiling into a fast, reeling wall that can hold form for up to 100m. SE or E winds keep it clean most of autumn and winter, which is the prime window running October through March. The wave suits capable intermediates in smaller surf but becomes experts-only once it goes overhead, with razor-sharp reef just beneath the surface on the inside. Bottom: lava reef. Season: Oct-Mar. Consistency: high. Come with a solid tube game, healthy caution about the inside section, and a respectful attitude toward a lineup where localism is not a rumour but a daily reality.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Always crowded, no exceptions. The take-off zone is small, which amplifies the competitive pressure. Localism here has a real reputation, but experienced visiting surfers who show respect, wait their turn, and don't snake sets generally report they can earn waves. Don't paddle straight to the peak on your first session. Read the lineup, observe the pecking order, and start on the shoulder.

Access & Facilities

Easy paddle from the beach at Playa de Las Americas. Multiple beachfront car parks available. A surf shop is on-site. Water quality is generally acceptable but aging local infrastructure has led to occasional sewage discharge reports, so worth checking conditions after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Izquierda is too crowded or maxed out, the broader Playa de Las Americas stretch has several other reef and beach peaks that can offer relief. For something mellower in small swells, look toward the Hotel Conquistador peak nearby, or head further along the south coast for spots that handle different swell angles.
