A heavy, long-walled reef break on the southwest coast of Tenerife, La Caleta only wakes up when serious swell pushes through, starting around 10-12ft and handling 16ft and beyond. It wants a solid NW to SW groundswell with clean offshore winds from the northeast, and tide matters less here than raw ocean energy. This is not a wave for beginners or the casually intermediate: the reef is unforgiving, the paddle-out demands commitment, and the crowd, while small, knows exactly what it is doing and has earned its place in the lineup. Bottom: reef. Season: autumn and winter swells, October through March. Consistency: low to moderate, only firing on significant groundswell events. Board hire is not available at the beach itself. Las Americas is your nearest option for rentals and supplies, so arrive prepared with the right equipment for the size on offer.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday and weekend crowds are consistently thin here, which reflects both the remote character of the spot and the high entry bar. The few surfers who paddle out at size know this wave well. Respect the pecking order, read the sets carefully, and do not overestimate your ability in serious swell.

Access & Facilities

La Caleta village sits on the southwest tip of Tenerife. There are no board hire facilities at the break, head to Las Americas for rentals, repairs, or supplies before you commit to the session. The reef demands booties and awareness of shallow sections during the drop in size or at low stages of the swell.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Caleta is too big or too small, the beach breaks and reef setups around Las Americas and El Medano offer options across a wider swell and wind range. El Medano in particular handles smaller NE windswells that leave La Caleta flat.
