A submerged reef wedging hollow peaks and fast walls at the heart of Las Palmas, La Barra is consistently rated among the best righthanders in Europe. The reef sits a substantial paddle from shore and needs W to N swell, ideally 3-8ft, with a southerly offshore to keep faces clean. Mid to high tide is essential: at low water the reef gets dangerously shallow and urchins become a real concern, with rocks capable of popping up unexpectedly. The wave suits intermediate to advanced surfers who can handle punchy take-offs, fast sectioning walls and the occasional wedging barrel. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: autumn through spring for the most consistent W and NW groundswell. Consistency: high year-round. The progressive erosion of the reef and growing sandbars on its lee side have altered the wave shape over time, so expect some variation.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Las Canteras is the most popular surfing zone in Gran Canaria, and La Barra draws a competitive, skilled crowd. Expect a packed lineup on any good day. Respect local surfers who know the reef and its shifting takeoff zones. Dawn sessions or mid-week windows reduce pressure but rarely empty the lineup.

Access & Facilities

Parking in Las Palmas requires a fee. There is a lifeguard presence on the main beach. It is a long paddle from the beachfront to reach the reef peak, so consider your entry carefully, particularly in cross-shore rips. The city offers every amenity nearby. Note the urchin population on the reef and wear foot protection through shallow sections.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Barra is too big, too crowded, or the tide is wrong, La Puntilla to the north offers a closer-to-shore peak worth checking. El Lloret provides a quality pointbreak option when E swell conditions align, and various performance peaks elsewhere in Las Palmas can fill gaps when the main reef is not cooperating.
