A reef-and-sand setup on Tenerife's windy south coast, El Medano splits into two distinct zones that suit different skill sets and conditions. The main bay picks up SW to S swell, and the persistent trade winds that make the area a windsurfing mecca can simultaneously build wave height for surfers, though they also create choppy, difficult conditions. Best size is 2-6ft, above that the wind chop and onshore conditions make clean surfing harder to find. Beginners and intermediates are well-suited to the inside sections and the sheltered second bay, but sharing the water with fast-moving windsurfers is a genuine hazard requiring constant awareness. Bottom: reef and rock with sand patches. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: moderate, wind-dependent. Time your sessions for early morning before the trades build, or pick a rare calm window.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are quiet with only a handful of surfers in the water. Weekends get heavily crowded. The bigger issue is the mixed-use lineup: windsurfers enter and exit at speed, particularly at the front of the main break, creating real collision risk. Surfers and windsurfers rarely coordinate. Stay alert, especially when paddling out or riding toward the beach.

Access & Facilities

Exit the TF-1 highway at El Medano signs and follow into the village. Parking is plentiful and close to the water. The main bay has cafes and bars nearby. Submerged rocks are spread across both zones and not always visible. Booties are worth considering. Watch for marked and unmarked rock shelves before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

Las Galletas to the south catches S swell in summer and can produce 2-3m bodyboard-friendly beach break. For cleaner surf conditions away from the windsurfer traffic, check other south-coast spots when S swell lines up cleanly without strong wind.
