A wedging right-hand reef break on the northwest tip of Gran Canaria, El Confital is widely regarded as one of the best righthanders in Europe. It needs W to N swell, 4ft minimum to wake up properly, and holds faces well past 12ft when solid NW groundswell arrives. Easterly winds go offshore, and mid to high tide keeps the reef from shutting the barrel down on take-off. The wave itself rewards experienced surfers who can handle fast, hollow sections over a submerged reef, but the crowd factor is the real reckoner: the lineup is consistently packed, and weekends push into ultra-crowded territory. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: autumn through spring (Oct-Mar). Consistency: medium. Get in the water early on weekday mornings, earn your position in the lineup gradually, and do not paddle for waves that aren't yours.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism has softened from its more intense era but is still present. El Confital has hosted WQS events and attracts surfers from Las Palmas daily, so expect a competitive, performance-oriented crowd every session. Weekends are ultra-crowded. Respect the pecking order, don't snake sets, and take time to read the lineup before paddling out. Attitude in the water directly influences how you are treated.

Access & Facilities

A short walk from the southern end of Las Canteras beach (La Puntilla) puts you at the break. Free parking exists in the area but the neighbourhood has a reputation for opportunistic theft, so leave nothing visible in the car. There are no facilities directly at the break. Las Palmas city is immediately on hand for food, water, and board repair.

Nearby Alternatives

When El Confital is maxed out or too crowded, Las Canteras beach directly behind it offers sheltered performance peaks suitable for a wider range of surfers. Further around the headland, a bigger and more serious left-hander operates in strong swell, but scout it carefully from land before committing.
