A long, powerful left-hand point that demands respect, El Charco sits on the north coast of the Canary Islands and ranks among the region's more serious waves. It needs NW to N swell at head-high or above before the multiple sections link into a continuous ride of 200-500m. S winds keep it clean and offshore. Mid-to-small swells leave the sections disconnected and uninspiring, so patience pays. Expert surfers only: heavy currents, shallow lava rock, and a territorial lineup make this no place for hesitation. Bottom: lava reef point. Season: autumn through winter, peak Oct-Feb. Consistency: medium. Bring a board with volume enough to handle the paddle against current, and enter and exit with care as the rocks are unforgiving. When it is on, the outside peak El Pozo activates for big-wave chargers hunting serious barrels on the larger swells.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is real here. The lineup is not welcoming to strangers who haven't paid dues, and the difficulty of the wave acts as a natural filter. Respect priority, sit wide on your first sessions, observe before paddling for anything, and keep the vibe quiet. Dawn patrol on mid-week days reduces friction.

Access & Facilities

Free parking but no facilities on site. The lava rock entry and exit requires careful timing, especially on bigger swells. Currents can be strong along the point, so know your exit before you paddle out. No food or water nearby, so bring your own.

Nearby Alternatives

The north coast of the island has several other reefs and beach breaks that handle different swell and wind combinations, giving options when El Charco is too small to link up or too big to manage. A fun, flexible right over sand and pebbles a short distance away works in smaller swells and suits a wider ability range.
