A fast, powerful reef break on Lanzarote's northwest coast, Caleta de Caballo sits between Caleta de Famara and La Santa on a stretch of exposed volcanic shoreline that rewards those willing to explore. It needs solid NW to W swell to switch on, and offshore winds blow from the SE. Tidal flexibility is a plus: the wave runs across all stages, though size window from the source data is incomplete, so treat anything from 3ft upward as fair game and adjust from there. It suits experienced surfers comfortable on shallow reef, and crowds are rarely an issue, even at weekends you'll share the lineup with very few others. Bottom: reef. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: low to moderate, requires proper swell. Short rides on average days, stretching to 50-150m when everything clicks. Bring a board you trust on fast, punchy waves and check conditions before committing to the drive.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are essentially empty. Weekends bring a handful of surfers at most. The Lanzarote northwest is a working-surfer circuit and the regulars know their spots, so paddle out with awareness and earn your sets the normal way. No heavy localism reported, but the usual respect protocols apply.

Access & Facilities

Head along the coast road from Caleta de Famara toward La Santa. A small coastal village on the right marks the turn-off. No facilities at the break itself. Famara has food, water, and surf shops a short drive away. The road is navigable in a standard car. Wear reef booties if your feet are soft.

Nearby Alternatives

Caleta de Famara's beach break is the obvious bailout when this reef is not cooperating and you need something more forgiving or better suited to smaller swell. La Santa has its own reef options further along the same coastal stretch for those prepared to hunt.
