A fast right-hand pointbreak on Gran Canaria's north coast, Boquines peels down volcanic rock for solid walls when E swell fills in. Optimal conditions call for N to E swell in the 3-8ft range, a southerly offshore wind, and low to mid tide to keep the wall defined and prevent sections from closing out too early. At size, rides can stretch well beyond 150m on a good day. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find it rewarding, though weekends draw local crews from Moya and nearby north coast towns, so expect a competitive lineup when it's on. Bottom: volcanic reef point. Season: spring through summer, March to August. Consistency: medium, gated by the E swell requirement. Arrive early on glassy mornings before the trade winds clock onshore and before the carpark fills up with regulars who know this wave well.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends bring crowds, particularly when the rest of the north coast is flat and Boquines is the only thing going. Locals from Moya anchor the lineup and know every section. Respect the pecking order, don't snake sets, and you'll be fine. Weekday dawn patrol sessions in mid-spring offer the best combination of quality and space.

Access & Facilities

There is a carpark, making access straightforward. No facilities on site, so bring water and food. The wave is publicly accessible and easy to locate on the north coast road. Volcanic reef underfoot means booties are worth considering if you're prone to reef contact on wipeouts.

Nearby Alternatives

When Boquines is too small or the swell angle is wrong, the wider north coast of Gran Canaria has several reef and point options that activate on different parts of the NW to E swell window. El Lloret, a punchy righthand point, is a solid fallback for similar E swell conditions a short drive away.
