A reef break on the northeast coast of Tenerife, Canary Islands, Bajamar produces long rides on its better days when Atlantic NW-NE swells push through with enough size. It needs a solid 3-5ft to wake up and can handle well overhead surf before closing out, with mid to high tide keeping the reef honest and the sections connecting. The wave sits in the experienced-surfer bracket, though on smaller days intermediate surfers can manage. Outside the September-October North Atlantic storm season the lineup is quiet, sometimes just a handful of surfers on weekends, but when the autumn swells fire the crowd thins to those who know what they are doing. Bottom: reef. Season: September-October peak, with secondary windows in winter. Consistency: moderate, tide and swell dependent. Check the forecast carefully before committing to the drive, a low swell will leave you watching flat water over exposed rock.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday sessions can be nearly empty. Weekends bring a few surfers but nothing intense outside the peak autumn months. When September-October storms deliver proper size, the crowd self-selects to experienced and advanced surfers. Respect the locals who know this reef year-round and yield on sets during the busy autumn windows.

Access & Facilities

The spot requires a drive from the Tenerife north coast. The road involves a hill before dropping to the break. No major facilities on site, so bring water and food. The reef demands boots on low tide and after wipeouts. Check for urchins on the paddle-out.

Nearby Alternatives

If Bajamar is too small or the tide is wrong, spots along the northern Tenerife coastline can offer reef and beach options suited to smaller or more forgiving conditions. Puerto de la Cruz has consistent beach break peaks nearby that work across a wider swell and tide range.
