The left is the headline: it races down the reef on all tides, hollowing out progressively at low with a heavy late-drop section, a hooking wall, and a final tube before shutdown. The right needs more water to line up, rewards airs when it does, but buries under bigger swell. Best from chest-high to well overhead in May through October. Intermediate to advanced surfers only. Localism is low and the vibe is welcoming, but small-day dry season crowds can stack up fast when Mawi is the only clean option on the coast. Tube hunters on Desert Point layovers fill out the lineup on big swells. Dawn sessions and early-week visits see the emptiest lineups. Respect the local families running the beach warungs.
Turn off the main highway onto a rough dirt track through farmland. Pay a small gate fee on entry. The road turns dangerous after heavy rain. No formal parking or facilities at the break. Warungs on the beach provide shade, coconuts, and food. At low tide, use the deeper channel past the left's end section to avoid walking exposed reef.
When Mawi is too big or too small, Grupuk to the east offers a cluster of reef setups inside the bay catering to a wider size range. Desert Point to the west is the region's marquee left-hand barrel for advanced surfers chasing longer rides on a solid SW pulse.
