Lombok's most consistent dry-season reef peak, Mawi sits in a west-facing bay about 45 minutes west of Kuta along a rough coastal road. S to SW swells wrap into the bay and unload on a sharp submerged reef, producing a shifty A-frame that splits into a short, punchy right and a longer, faster left. The left is the headline: it races down the reef on all tides, hollowing out progressively at low with a heavy late-drop section, a hooking wall, and a final tube before shutdown. The right needs more water to line up, rewards airs when it does, but buries under bigger swell. Best from chest-high to well overhead in May through October. Intermediate to advanced surfers only. The reef is sharp, currents in the channel run very strong, and the low-tide paddle-out requires careful route-finding through exposed rock. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: dry season, May to October. Consistency: high. Back the local warungs on the beach. They'll shade you, feed you nasi goreng, and watch your gear while you're in the water.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is low and the vibe is welcoming, but small-day dry season crowds can stack up fast when Mawi is the only clean option on the coast. Tube hunters on Desert Point layovers fill out the lineup on big swells. Dawn sessions and early-week visits see the emptiest lineups. Respect the local families running the beach warungs.

Access & Facilities

Turn off the main highway onto a rough dirt track through farmland. Pay a small gate fee on entry. The road turns dangerous after heavy rain. No formal parking or facilities at the break. Warungs on the beach provide shade, coconuts, and food. At low tide, use the deeper channel past the left's end section to avoid walking exposed reef.

Nearby Alternatives

When Mawi is too big or too small, Grupuk to the east offers a cluster of reef setups inside the bay catering to a wider size range. Desert Point to the west is the region's marquee left-hand barrel for advanced surfers chasing longer rides on a solid SW pulse.
