Don-Don breaks over a submerged reef in the middle of Grupuk Bay, roughly 2km east of Kuta Lombok, accessible only by boat from the village of Ampang. It needs a SE to SW swell to push into the bay and a mid to high tide to cover the fishing frames and activate the break. Rights are the main event, with easy-entry walls that glide predictably off the reef, lefts show up on smaller days and run slightly faster. The wave suits beginners and intermediate surfers learning to read walls, though it flatters to deceive on occasion with a bit more pace than it first advertises. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: dry season, May through October. Consistency: medium. Arrive early or on weekdays if possible, because Grupuk Bay draws all skill levels in volume and the lineup at Don-Don can get genuinely crowded, requiring patience and awareness around less experienced surfers.
Grupuk Bay as a whole draws heavy boat traffic from Kuta surf schools, and Don-Don is no exception. All skill levels share the water, often chaotically. Localism is not a primary concern, but collision risk with beginners is real. Give learners room, call your waves clearly, and keep a wide berth on a set wave.
The road from Kuta terminates at Ampang village. From there, a short boat charter is required to reach Don-Don and the other Grupuk bay peaks. No parking or facilities at the break itself. Kuta has full services including board rentals, food, and accommodation just a few minutes away.
When Don-Don is crowded or flat, the other Grupuk bay setups offer variety across skill levels. Mawi, a short distance west, is a quality dry-season reef break that handles all swell sizes and rewards more experienced surfers with better-shaped walls.
