Outer Ekas delivers a long, fast, hollow left-hand wall off a coral reef on the remote southeast corner of Lombok, with a fun right reform breaking deeper inside the bay. Both waves are reforms off an outer bombora, so they need a solid SW swell to fire, generally waist-high to overhead before the outer left shows its best shape. SE trade winds keep it clean and offshore through the dry season, making May to September the window to target. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find room to breathe here. The lineup stays mellow most days, with a genuinely welcoming local vibe and almost no competitive pressure. Bottom: coral reef. Season: May to September. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Pack reef booties if your feet aren't hardened, and bring a couple of board options since the outer and inner waves ride very differently. The right inside the bay is more forgiving and suits a wider range of surfers when the outer isn't doing much.
Ekas draws few surfers even on weekends. The local vibe is welcoming and there's no localism to speak of. That said, the region has around ten breaks within the bay alone, so if the main peak is crowded on a rare big-swell day, options are nearby. Dawn patrol is rarely a tactical necessity here, but it rewards you with glassy conditions before the trade winds build.
Access is by short boat ride from Kuta Lombok's western bay side. Overland is possible but a significant mission on rough roads. Boat charters from Bali also reach here. Accommodation is available in the Ekas area, and the bay reportedly has diving and snorkelling when the surf is flat. Reef cuts are the main hazard, wear protection and bring a basic first-aid kit for coral wounds.
With roughly ten breaks scattered across Ekas Bay and the surrounding southern reefs, flat spells or unfavourable swells at Outer Ekas rarely mean a wasted day. The inside right is the obvious fallback when the outer isn't breaking, and the wider southern Lombok coast toward Kuta has additional reef setups worth exploring when SW swell is smaller.
