One of the most coveted left-hand barrels on the planet fires off a shallow coral shelf on the remote southwest tip of Lombok, but it demands patience and a well-timed SW groundswell to deliver. Optimal conditions are SW swell at 5-10ft, low tide only, with glassy mornings or a SE trade wind. The wave is famously fickle: at high tide on a pumping swell it can go dead flat, then turn double-overhead and shacking on the next low. Advanced surfers only. Lineups run heavy and the vibe is intimidating, despite relatively few surfers most days. Bottom: coral reef. Season: June-September. Consistency: low, swell-dependent. Bring a full quiver, check tide tables obsessively, and budget for waiting days.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowd ratings sit near the top of any scale, heavy and with an intimidating local vibe. Numbers in the water can stay low due to remoteness, but when a swell hits the lineup fills fast and respect is non-negotiable. Priority goes to those who know the wave. Dawn patrol improves your odds before the crowd assembles.

Access & Facilities

Access is by boat from Bali or via ferry to Lembar, then overland to the southwest coast. The journey runs 8 hours or more. Accommodation is basic beachside lodging, budget around $50 for a return trip from Bali. Malaria is endemic in the region: take prophylactics and consult a doctor before travel. Sharks have been reported. Reef cuts are severe. Carry a full first-aid kit and reef booties for entry and exit.

Nearby Alternatives

When Desert Point is too big, too small, or on the wrong tide, the south Lombok coast and Sumbawa offer additional reef setups worth exploring. Kuta Lombok has more forgiving beach and reef options for rest days.
