SW swell feeds the right off the west end of the bay, while S swell lights up the shiftier left. Best size runs chest-high to well overhead, with low-to-mid tide sharpening the right into steep walls and hollow inside sections, and mid-to-high tide needed to make the left workable. The channel down the middle of the bay makes for an easy paddle-out, and the local vibe is genuinely welcoming. Bottom: reef, shallow on the left. Season: October to April. Consistency: good during wet season mornings before SE trades arrive. Come armed with reef booties and watch your positioning on outgoing tide when the rip runs hard.
Moderate crowds but the 20-minute drive from Kuta filters out the day-trippers who stack up at higher-profile breaks. The crew here skews mellow. Welcoming local vibe. Dawn patrol sessions during wet season regularly deliver glassy, uncrowded conditions.
Drive a steep hill descent to the bay, park at the beach, and paddle out through the rip running down the central channel. On outgoing tide that channel rip runs strong, so angle away when paddling in to avoid getting pulled back out. Sharp reef is the main hazard. A warung on the beach serves coconuts post-session. Fishermen can shuttle you out by outrigger for a small fee.
When Air Guling is too small or blown out, the better-known breaks around Kuta bay offer more swell exposure. On big S swells, explore the bays further east along the South Lombok coast for more sheltered options.
