Grupuk Bay holds three distinct reef setups reachable only by boat from the fishing village of Grupuk, about 5km east of Kuta Lombok. The main draw is a rolling, long-shouldered right over submerged coral that stretches 150-300m on a good day, firing on S to SW swells from 3ft up to well overhead. Offshore NW winds and mid-to-high tide keep it clean, the SE trades, which dominate the dry season afternoons, blow it out fast. Intermediates find plenty of room on the shoulder, while the outer reform peak occasionally jacks up for more experienced surfers to work with. The bay is a scheduled stop on most surf charter itineraries, which means crowds are a real factor. Bottom: submerged coral reef. Season: May through October. Consistency: medium. Catch it at dawn before the trade winds fill in, and factor in boat hire from the village before paddling out.
This bay pulls surf charters and Kuta-based surfers daily through the dry season. The inside peak can fill with beginners and European backpackers with limited lineup etiquette. Locals running the boats are welcoming and easygoing, but the crowd itself is the real challenge. Dawn patrol consistently delivers the best conditions and the thinnest lineup.
Boat hire from Grupuk village is the only access. Budget for the return trip and tip the boat operator. Kuta, 5-7 minutes by motorbike, has accommodation, food, and board rentals. There are no facilities at the break itself. Reef cuts are the main hazard, booties are worth considering at lower tides.
When Grupuk is too crowded or the wind has come up, check Mawi to the west for a quality S-swell setup that handles all sizes in a more sheltered setting. Desert Point, further along Lombok's southwest tip, is the region's benchmark left-hand barrel for experienced surfers when the conditions align.
