Fast, hollow rights peel off the shallow fringing reef at the south-east corner of Gili Trawangan, roughly 300m offshore, and they pack considerably more punch than this party island's reputation suggests. S to SW swells of 3-8ft with a NW offshore wind are the target window, and mid to high tide keeps the reef manageable. This is a wave for experienced intermediates and above: the takeoff is approachable, but sections jack hard over shallow coral and rogue sets above double overhead appear with little warning. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: May to September dry season. Consistency: medium, fickle outside prime conditions. Pack a step-up and respect the reef below you at all times, because when the swell spikes the depth margin disappears fast.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Local surfers here are consistently described as welcoming and will often give up waves to watch visitors surf. Weekend crowds remain light. The fickle nature of the break keeps numbers manageable. Return that respect by not dropping in, keeping sessions low-key, and not broadcasting exact conditions when the place is firing.

Access & Facilities

Boat access only from Gili Trawangan. No parking and no surf facilities on this stretch. The island has plentiful food, accommodation, and rental options in the main strip. No significant pollution concerns, but be aware of snorkeling tourist boat traffic around the reef. Urchins and the shallow coral itself are the primary physical hazards.

Nearby Alternatives

When Gili Trawangan is flat, the south Lombok coast around Kuta offers more swell exposure. Mawi handles all swell sizes on a quality reef setup. Desert Point to the west is one of the longest left barrels on the planet when the swell and wind align.
