A long right peeling off the north jetty of Saint Jean de Luz bay, Sainte Barbe handles the swell that overwhelms the open reefs outside. NW to N swells wrap around the jetty head, producing a sucky, committed take-off followed by walling sections that refract along the reef for up to 150m down to Inside Sainte-Barbe, where lefts occasionally appear and the tide makes or breaks the ride. Best on a dropping tide with an E wind keeping it clean. Works from 3ft up to 8ft-plus, though water quality after heavy rain is suspect, and those same storms push the swell that fires this spot. The result is a self-selecting crowd: experts on the jetty peak, intermediates at the Insides, beginners further inside at Les Flots Bleus. Bottom: reef and jetty. Season: autumn-winter. Consistency: low. The paddle-out to the jetty is long and currents can make it slow going, so time your entry to minimise the grind.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is the default spot when Guéthary, Cenitz and the open reefs close out, so the lineup fills fast on any rideable swell during autumn and winter. The crowd self-segregates by skill level across the three sections, which limits direct competition, but do not expect an empty peak at the jetty on a pumping day. Dawn patrol is the obvious move.

Access & Facilities

Park in the carpark off the bay road and paddle out along the jetty wall. The paddle is a genuine workout, especially against current after rain. Toilets on site. Saint Jean de Luz town centre is walkable and has cafes, restaurants and surf shops. Avoid surfing here in the 24-48 hours after heavy rain due to estuary runoff affecting water quality.

Nearby Alternatives

If Sainte Barbe is too crowded or too small, Guéthary's reefs to the north offer several options including the powerful left at the harbour and the Sunset-like right of Les Alcyons. If the whole coast is maxing, the beachbreaks around Hendaye to the south provide a more manageable alternative.
