A mellow beachbreak tucked beneath low cliffs on the Basque coast, Erretegia works on a wide W-to-N swell window and handles most tides, though dropping tide is preferable as the beach shrinks significantly at high water. SW-to-NW swells in the 2-5ft range produce the most user-friendly conditions, with SE offshores grooming the faces. Surf schools have used this spot for years precisely because the wave is forgiving when small to medium, but scattered rocks mean beginners should stay aware of what's underfoot. Bottom: sand and rock mix. Season: autumn and winter deliver the most consistent swell. Consistency: high. The walk down from the car park is long enough to thin out the crowd, though local surf club members do fill the lineup on good days, so aim for early mornings mid-week.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

A Roxy contest in 2002 put Erretegia on the map, but the lengthy walk from the car park has since kept pressure manageable. Expect local surf school groups on weekday mornings and club surfers on weekend peaks. Dawn patrol mid-week is the cleanest option for a mellower lineup.

Access & Facilities

Park in the signposted car park and follow the path down to the beach. Restrooms are available. The beach sits below low cliffs and disappears on big high tides, so check the tide chart before making the walk. No significant pollution hazards reported.

Nearby Alternatives

When Erretegia is too small or too crowded, the beachbreaks further north along the Côte Basque offer more stretch and shifting peaks. For surfers ready to step up, the reefbreaks around Guéthary fire on similar W-NW swells and deliver a sharper, more technical wave.
