Punchy A-frame beachbreak peaks roll through Le Penon, a long stretch of sand on the Landes coast just north of the Hossegor core. NW and W swells are the engine here, with easterly offshores grooming the banks from waist-high up to a solid 6-8ft before rips become seriously unruly. All tides work, though sandbars shift constantly, so the best peak one morning may be a closeout by afternoon. This suits a wide range of surfers, but the lineup draws a competitive crowd in summer and again whenever Hossegor fires. Bottom: sand. Season: Sep-Nov primary, with Jan-Feb and Oct-Dec also productive. Consistency: high. When Graviere and the southern spots are maxed out or wall-to-wall pros, Le Penon often has a fraction of the circus, though still plenty of bodies. Bring a fish or a shortboard, read the rip before paddling out, and stay humble in a lineup that has seen everything.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Summer brings water-park tourists, surf-school beginners, and the full Hossegor jet-set whenever nearby breaks go flat. Localism exists and is competitive, rated doable but not relaxed. the surfer community is blunt: on a rideable peak, 30-40 surfers appear almost immediately. Dawn patrol in autumn or a swell that catches forecasters off-guard gives the best chance of breathing room. Respect the hierarchy, give way on crowded peaks, and move up or down the beach to find an unpressured sandbar.

Access & Facilities

Large free car park sits behind the dunes with direct access over the sand. Full facilities include a surf school, webcam, mini skatepark, camping, and tourist amenities in summer. Car crime has been reported at the north end near L'agréou. Water quality is generally clean but degrades after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When Le Penon is maxed or swarming, the Seignosse beaches immediately to the south offer similar setups with potentially different bank quality. On genuinely big W swells, sheltered options around Capbreton port provide calmer conditions for intermediate surfers not ready for full Landes power.
