Biscarrosse-Plage is a three-mile stretch of Atlantic sand on the Landes coast of southwest France, pulling in head-on west swells from the Bay of Biscay year-round across multiple shifting peaks. Best conditions arrive with a W to NW groundswell, light easterly offshores, and a rising tide that fills the banks and cleans up the face. Summer brings mellow, waist-to-shoulder-high rollers that suit beginners and longboarders, autumn pumps the size up, with October delivering the best combo of swell quality and lighter crowds for intermediates. The lineup is packed with holidaymakers through July and August. Bottom: sand. Season: September to November. Consistency: moderate to high. Strong rip currents run along the beach year-round, so learn to read them before paddling out and stay within flagged zones if you're new to the Atlantic.
July and August fill the beach with French summer crowds and surf school students. The sheer length of beach dilutes the pressure somewhat, but popular peaks get competitive. Autumn thins out significantly. Localism is minimal, be patient with learners sharing the peaks during peak season.
Biscarrosse-Plage is well-serviced with car parks, beachside cafes, surf schools, and board rentals in town. The beach is lifeguard-patrolled in summer with marked surf zones. From Bordeaux it is roughly 75 km southwest via the D652.
Mimizan-Plage, 25 km south, offers similar beach break setups with slightly less summer pressure. Hossegor's La Gravière and La Nord, another 60 km south, step up the power and quality significantly when autumn swells arrive.
