Bidart's beachbreaks sit just south of Biarritz, picking up slightly less swell than the busier town breaks to the north, which actually works in their favour when the Basque Coast is maxing out. NW to W swells from 2-6ft with a SE or ESE offshore are the sweet spot. Mid-size surf keeps the peaks punchy and defined rather than a wall of whitewater. All tides work across the main beach, though Plage d'Erretegia at the northern end gets rocky and shallow on the push, so time that section on the drop. The crowd is real: a competitive local surf club scene means the lineup fills up quickly on weekends and in summer. Bottom: sand with rock. Season: spring and autumn (Mar-May, Sep-Oct) for best shape and thinner crowds. Consistency: high but fickle quality. Scattered rocks are present across the beach at low tide, so check before paddling out blind.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

A strong local surf club drives real competition in the lineup, particularly on weekends and through July and August. The local vibe is described as doable but demands humility. Dawn patrol on weekdays in shoulder season is the practical move. Don't expect empty peaks in peak summer regardless of conditions.

Access & Facilities

Park along Rue de la Plage with the beachfront car park as the main option. Short walk to the sand. Lifeguard cover in season. The nearby river can compromise water quality after heavy rain, so check conditions post-storm before paddling out. Food and facilities in Bidart village a short walk inland.

Nearby Alternatives

When Bidart closes out in larger swells, Guéthary to the south offers a more structured right-hand reef setup that handles size better. If the whole Basque Coast is maxed, the long beachbreak stretches of Les Landes to the north provide more consistent shape in bigger conditions.
