A long right-hand point that comes alive on SW to NW swells between Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Guéthary, Erromardie is one of the quieter options on the Basque Coast. It needs at least 3ft of swell to get going, but once it hits 4-8ft it delivers walls running 50-150m on average, pushing to 300m on a good day. Mid to high tide keeps the sections connected, low tide exposes the reef and kills the shape. This suits experienced surfers who can read a point break lineup and handle reef underfoot. The weekday crowd is minimal, weekends see a handful of locals. Bottom: reef/point. Season: autumn to late winter. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Arrive early on weekend mornings to beat the few regulars who know this one works.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Erromardie stays relatively uncrowded compared to nearby Lafitenia and the Saint-Jean-de-Luz beach breaks. Weekdays are near-empty, weekends bring a few surfers. The vibe is generally relaxed but respect the lineup order on a point break, wait your turn, and avoid snaking on the longer set waves.

Access & Facilities

From Saint-Jean-de-Luz heading towards Guéthary, follow the coastal road and signs for Plage d'Erromardie. Parking is straightforward at the beach end. The reef bottom means boardshoes or reef boots are worth considering. Check water quality after heavy rain given the proximity to the Nivelle estuary.

Nearby Alternatives

When Erromardie is too small, Lafitenia just up the road handles larger swells and offers longer walls. The beach breaks of Saint-Jean-de-Luz work in a wider range of conditions and cater to mixed skill levels when the point breaks are maxing out.
