Carcans delivers punchy, powerful beachbreak peaks on the Médoc coast of Southwest France, sitting quietly in the shadow of its more famous neighbor Lacanau, roughly 15km to the south. SW to NW swells from 3ft upward get it going, with easterly offshores grooming the banks into clean walls and occasional barrels. Mid-sized swell around 4-6ft is the sweet spot, when peaks can line up for rides stretching 150-300m on the better banks. It suits beginners through intermediates, though the lineup thins dramatically outside summer, leaving autumn mornings genuinely uncrowded. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round, peaks autumn. Consistency: high. Arrive early on summer weekends or expect serious competition for peaks, as the spot draws overflow crowds from Lacanau and holds its own surf club culture with Carcans Océan Surf Club anchoring the local scene.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Summer weekends get ultra-crowded, particularly when Lacanau is maxed or messy and surfers spill north. Autumn is the flip side: sparse lineups, improving bank quality, and mainly local club members in the water. Treat the Carcans Océan Surf Club crew with respect, they run this beach year-round.

Access & Facilities

Direct car park access from the coastal road. Camping is available nearby, making it a practical base for a multi-day stay. No significant pollution or hazard concerns noted, though rips build with size. The broader Médoc coast has no shortage of peaks if the main banks are blown out or crowded.

Nearby Alternatives

Lacanau to the south is the regional hub with more infrastructure and an ASP contest history, but expect bigger crowds. North of Hourtin, the Forêt du Flamand corridor offers a long run of less-trafficked peaks accessible by bicycle, worth the effort when the main spots are packed.
