A sand-bottom freight train at the heart of Hossegor, La Nord is one of the best beachbreak barrels in the world. It needs NW or W swell in the 8-15ft range to switch on, pairs best with E or ESE offshores, and runs at all tides. When the bank aligns and the swell angle is right, the tubes here are as fast and hollow as any sand-bottom wave in Europe. This is expert-only territory: shallow sandbars, powerful closeout sections, and sets that arrive without warning make it hostile to anyone not comfortable at double-overhead and beyond. Bottom: sand. Season: September through March. Consistency: swell-dependent, fickle below 6ft. Bring a gun or a heavy shortboard and check the forecast obsessively before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays see a manageable crowd of experienced surfers. Weekends bring more bodies, and when it's firing, France's best will be in the lineup alongside traveling pros. The local vibe is described as doable, but make no mistake: this is the epicenter of French surfing. Respect in the water is earned through competence, not politeness. Don't paddle out here to prove something.

Access & Facilities

La Nord sits on the central beach of Hossegor, easily walkable from the town's cafes and restaurants. Parking, food, and gear shops are all close. Water quality is rated fair. The hazards are the wave itself: shallow sandbars and powerful barrels that can hold you down hard. Currents and unexpected set waves are a constant.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Nord is too big or the bank is blown out, La Gravière sits close by and often offers a more manageable option on the same swell. Les Culs Nus and La Piste provide further beachbreak alternatives along the same stretch of Landes coast when conditions don't suit the main peak.
