Peaky beach break peaks on the Cap Ferret peninsula, roughly an hour from Bordeaux, make Le Grand Crohot the most accessible Atlantic option for the city's surf crowd. SW to NW swells at 2-6ft with an easterly offshore produce the best shape, and the spot works across all tides, though the outer bars can wall up and close out beyond 2m. Intermediate surfers will find plenty to work with on a good bank day, but summer weekends pull real crowds given the proximity to Bordeaux and the large campsite nearby. Bottom: sand. Season: spring through autumn, with the best banks often forming in summer peaky swells. Consistency: high. For fewer bodies in the water, check the banks near the southern bunkers or drift toward Petit Crohot, the adjoining nudist beach, which tends to be noticeably quieter.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds peak hard on summer weekends. The large camping adjacent to the beach fills fast through July and August, pushing numbers in the water up. Winter thins the lineup considerably. Localism is not a notable concern, but showing basic surf etiquette goes a long way in a lineup that can get busy. Dawn sessions are the smart play on summer weekends.

Access & Facilities

From Bordeaux, take the route toward Saint Jean d'Illac then on to Lège Cap Ferret. Follow signs for Plage du Grand-Crohot. A car park serves the main beach. No permanent facilities on site, so bring water and food. The peninsula roads can back up badly in peak summer, so plan accordingly.

Nearby Alternatives

When Grand Crohot is packed or the banks are poor, the Cap Ferret peninsula hides a dozen semi-named peaks that can produce great shape on any given day. Lacanau to the north is the established contest venue with more consistent infrastructure when you need it.
