Twelve kilometres of open Landes beachbreak put Saint-Girons-Plage somewhere between Hossegor's heavy barrels and the average shifting walls you find up and down this coast. It picks up W to N swell reliably, works at all tides, and the sandbanks can throw up punchy A-frames on cleaner mornings when an easterly wind grooms the face. Best in the 3-8ft range before the banks start closing out, at 2ft it's a learner's playground, at overhead-plus it demands more experience to read the peaks. This is a summer focal point for foreign surfers, naturists, and families, with two large camping areas in the forest behind the dunes and surf schools operating on the sand. German Surf Championships have been held here, which gives you a sense of the wave potential on a good day. Beginners are well-served, but intermediate surfers willing to explore north or south of the main access point will find less company and better shape. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round, peaking autumn. Consistency: high. Book camping early in July and August, and plan dawn sessions to beat the summer crowd before the sea breeze fills in.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect crowds on summer weekends, particularly at the main beach access. Families, learners, and surf-school groups fill the inside. Localism is low. Spread out along the 12km of beach when the main peak is packed, there is no shortage of empty sand to north and south during weekdays or shoulder season.

Access & Facilities

A single road leads into the village from the D652, making it easy to spot-check before pulling in. There is a car park at the main beach. Two large forest campsites provide affordable stays. Surf hire and lessons are available on-site. A historical note: the regional editorials guide flags pollution concerns from an industrial facility in town, including a waste outfall near the beach. Check current water-quality reports before sessions, particularly after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When the banks at Saint-Girons close out, Mimizan to the south offers jetty-shaped sandbars that can produce more organised point-style walls in similar swell. Lit-et-Mixe and Contis-Plage are also within easy reach along the D652 and worth a quick check for cleaner peaks on the same swell.
