Sandbar peaks running along a broad Atlantic beach just south of the Landes forest, Ondres-Plage picks up SW-to-NW groundswell reliably and delivers hollow, punchy beach-break barrels when conditions align. Works best on a S-to-W wind (offshore or cross-off), at low to mid tide, in the 3-6ft range where the sandbars section up and throw. Bigger swells above 8ft are rideable but the beach closes out fast, so pick your bank carefully. Crowds stay light even on weekends, with a mix of beginners on the inside and a small local crew taking the hollower peaks. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn and winter groundswell (Sept-Feb). Consistency: moderate to good when Atlantic systems track correctly. Camp in the area and treat it as a warm-up or overflow option when Hossegor is maxed or packed: the banks shift constantly, so walk the beach at low tide and identify the best-running section before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Generally quiet on weekdays, a few surfers on weekends. Locals are described as respectful of standard lineup etiquette. Beginners tend to cluster on smaller inside reform sections, leaving the main peaks less competitive. No heavy localism reported, but the usual good-manners rules apply.

Access & Facilities

Drive directly to Ondres-Plage. Camping at Camp du Lac sits just up the road and is a practical base. Biarritz and Hossegor are within easy driving distance for gear, food, and alternative surf. Beach has the standard amenities for a Landes plage. No significant hazards beyond rip currents on larger swells.

Nearby Alternatives

When Ondres is closing out in big swell, Hossegor's beachbreak and point options absorb power better. Biarritz's sheltered spots like Côte des Basques work on smaller, messy days when Ondres is too small or blown out.
