Shifty beachbreak peaks backed by pine forest and sand dunes, Moliets sits 25 km north of Capbreton in the Landes stretch of Southwest France. Works best on small to medium W to NW swell with E offshores, from waist to head high, though it can hold up to 8ft on a good sandbar year. Best tide is low to mid, as high tide tends to shut the banks down. The river mouth of the Courant d'Huchet can produce the best setups when sand accumulates correctly, throwing short barreling sections and occasional 100-150m walls. Surf camps and summer tourists flood the water from June through August, creating genuine tension with competitive locals on the better peaks. Bottom: Sandbanks. Season: September through February. Consistency: High. Arrive at dawn in summer to beat the crowd or plan your trip for autumn when the banks are still active and the lineups thin out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Summer is genuinely crowded. Surf schools, camps, and tourist buses pack the lineup, and locals grow irritable with beginners dropping in or bailing boards. Localism is rated doable but competitive locals claim the best peaks. Autumn reduces pressure significantly. Spread across the 12 km of coast rather than stacking on one peak.

Access & Facilities

Parking on Rue de l'Embouchure, busy in summer. Full facilities: surf schools, shops, a large campsite. Water quality is generally clean but degrades after heavy rain due to river outflow. Board-related hazards are real in summer crowds.

Nearby Alternatives

When Moliets closes out, Capbreton and Hossegor to the south offer more structured banks and reef options for stronger swells. Saint-Julien-en-Born to the north is quieter with shifting peaks if you want space.
