A high-consistency beachbreak on the Landes coast, Mimizan-Plage sits either side of the Courant de Mimizan rivermouth, where shifting sandbars produce reliable peaks across four beaches. W to N swells are the target window, starting to work below 1m and holding shape up to 2m-plus. Offshore easterlies clean it up, and it fires at most tide stages, though mid to high tide tends to produce the best-defined bars near the rivermouth. The wave suits beginners through to solid intermediates chasing fast, punchy sections on good days. Crowds are manageable outside July and August, when the summer resort fills with European campers. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round with autumn peaks. Consistency: high. Be aware of estuary pollution from the Courant de Mimizan, especially after rain, and note that offshore winds occasionally carry industrial odour from nearby paper mills to the north.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Mimizan attracts a heavy summer influx of European surfers, particularly from the Netherlands and Germany. Tensions between seasonal visitors and locals have been documented in the water. Dawn patrol in shoulder season avoids most pressure. Respect the lineup, take turns, and be aware that locals know the sandbanks better than you do.

Access & Facilities

A carpark sits close to the main beach. The town offers full resort facilities including food, surf rentals, and camping. Check water quality advisories after rain given estuary runoff. The main peak is straightforward to reach on foot from the car park.

Nearby Alternatives

When Mimizan is blown out or crowded, Contis-Plage to the north offers similar beachbreak with a lighthouse for checking sandbars from above. Cap de l'Homy and Lit-et-Mixe provide further peaks along the same stretch of coast, all responding to the same swell window with subtle sandbar variations.
