Marinella is one of several beach-break peaks strung along the Anglet coastline in Southwest France, sitting between the Basque Country and the Landes pine forests. It picks up Atlantic SW to NW swells from around 1ft and can handle overhead-plus before closing out, making it functional across a wide size range. Offshore winds come from the E to SE, which is the standard Basque Coast pattern. Mid tide tends to produce the cleanest walls, though sandbars shift seasonally and after winter storms, so the setup varies significantly. The crowd picture is honest: weekdays it's busy, weekends it's rammed, and the lineup carries some local attitude. Bottom: sand. Season: Sept through Nov for the best swell-to-crowd ratio. Consistency: moderate to good. Come at dawn to get waves to yourself, keep your gear in sight, and don't leave valuables in your car at the Marinella parking area.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the most surfed stretches in France. Weekdays are busy, weekends are genuinely difficult in summer. Some locals can be territorial. Standard protocol: respect the lineup, don't drop in, read the hierarchy quickly. Dawn patrol from late September to November is the best window for quality waves with manageable crowds.

Access & Facilities

Parking is at the dedicated Marinella car park in Anglet. Don't leave valuables in your car or on the beach unattended. Anglet has full amenities nearby: water, food, surf shops, and rentals within a short drive. Water quality is generally acceptable but can drop after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

Anglet runs a chain of numbered beach-break peaks from Les Cavaliers to La Barre. If Marinella is blown out or too crowded, check the adjacent peaks north or south along the same stretch. Biarritz's La Grande Plage picks up similar swell and can offer different conditions depending on the sandbar.
