La Piste, the main break at Capbreton just south of Hossegor across the river, delivers punishing shorebreak barrels that put it on the map when Tom Curren and the Rip Curl crew made it famous in the early 1990s. NW and WNW swells are the engine here, ideally arriving at head-high to double-overhead with an E wind keeping faces clean. Low to mid-low tide is when the sand loads up and the barrels throw hardest. The crowd is heavy and densely packed, a consequence of how close the break sits to shore: surfers cluster within a tight zone and the shared tube-lust becomes its own kind of communication. Bottom: sand, with buried WWII German bunkers close by. Season: peaks October to February but can fire year-round. Consistency: reliable when SW France's autumn and winter swells are running. Arrive at dawn or look to the tide-sensitive peaks south of La Piste if the main peak is shoulder-to-shoulder.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the most crowded beach barrels in southwest France. The tight takeoff zone means ten surfers can feel like forty. Locals are intense but not overtly hostile, though confused or hesitant visitors will get no favors. Respect priority, don't snake, and read the lineup before paddling straight to the peak. Autumn weekday mornings are your best shot at a manageable crowd.

Access & Facilities

Capbreton is easy to reach from Hossegor, roughly 3 km south. Wind around the harbor, park near the retirement home, and walk a short distance south to the beach. Water quality is frequently poor, often polluted from harbor runoff. Buried WWII bunkers sit near the break, a real hazard if you get pushed into the shorebreak. Capbreton town has cafes, surf shops, and everything you need for a full day.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Piste is too crowded or the swell too big, the tide-sensitive peaks scattered south of the main peak are worth checking. A short drive north puts you into Hossegor's beachbreaks, including Les Culs Nus and La Nord, which can handle more size and offer more room to breathe.
