A powerful, shifting beach-break on the southwest France Atlantic coast, Le Petit Train delivers fast, punchy peaks that sharpen dramatically at low tide. Optimal swell window is W to NW, 3-8ft, with offshore winds from the E to SE. Low and mid tides activate the sandbars best, high tide tends to flatten and close out the banks. Sandbank morphology changes each season, so the peak you scored last August may have migrated by the time you return. Weekdays stay quiet enough to find space, but weekends draw crowds fast, and the locals are a known presence in the better peaks. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer through autumn for swell consistency. Consistency: moderate to good. The N-running current is strong when swell is up, so be deliberate about your paddle-out line and re-entry point, especially if you're not a confident ocean swimmer.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday sessions run light, with room to pick your peak. Weekends see the lineup fill quickly. A small local crew holds priority on the better banks, they're described as approachable but expect respect. Don't snake, wait your turn, and the atmosphere stays positive. Dawn patrol or late-afternoon sessions on weekdays are your best bet for space.

Access & Facilities

Access is easy. A tourist train runs from the embarkation point (débarquadère) to the beach, and from there a short walk puts you on the sand. Walk further if you want more room. The nearby villages around Le Bassin d'Arcachon are within walking distance and offer food and supplies. A surf school and surf shop are reported nearby on rue des Goélands for equipment and lessons.

Nearby Alternatives

The broader Landes and Gironde coastline between Lacanau and Hossegor offers dozens of beach-break options that respond to similar W-NW swell windows. When Le Petit Train's banks are flat or maxed out, checking neighboring peaks along this stretch will almost always turn up a working option.
