Lacanau's beachbreak punches above its weight by squeezing every passing Atlantic swell through a series of groins that pin sand into reliable, often-barreling peaks along a wide stretch of Gironde coastline. NW and W swells are the engine here, with E winds cleaning up the face, it works across all tides and starts producing rideable surf below 1m, holding shape to 2.5m-plus on good banks. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find the most reward, though the accessible car-park lineup means crowds are a genuine factor, especially in July and August when the beach becomes one of France's busiest lineups. Bottom: sand. Season: October to February for the best banks and thinnest crowds. Consistency: year-round, but autumn swells deliver the longest-period energy. Groins help shape peaks but also concentrate the crowd, so pre-dawn paddles outside summer are your best move for uncrowded rides.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lacanau is the busiest surf spot in the Gironde, full stop. A WQS contest history, easy road access, and a large town infrastructure all funnel surfers to the same stretch of sand. Summer brings intense competition for waves. Locals are broadly welcoming off-peak, but shoulder burn is real when it's pumping. September onwards the crowd drops sharply.

Access & Facilities

Drive directly from Bordeaux (roughly 50km west). Parking fronts the main beach, which is both a convenience and the reason it draws crowds. Surf schools, board rentals, and cafes are clustered in town. Rip currents between the groins are the primary hazard, identify the channel before paddling out. Water quality is rated clean.

Nearby Alternatives

Hossegor to the south offers heavier, more powerful beachbreak peaks and is the benchmark for the Landes coast when Lacanau is maxed out or overrun. Soulac-sur-Mer to the north picks up less swell but stays quieter on busy summer weekends.
