Sheltered from the full force of the Atlantic by its position just south of La Gravière, La Sud is Hossegor's pressure-release valve on big swell days. W to NW swells from 2ft to 8ft light it up, with lefts dominating when the banks are right. Offshore easterly winds groom the faces, and low to mid tide is the window before the shorebreak shuts things down on the push. It suits beginners and improvers looking for open-faced waves without the intensity of the breaks to the north, though crowds are a regular reality, especially during summer and on any weekend when nearby spots are pumping. Bottom: sand. Season: September through April. Consistency: medium. One honest warning: the proximity to the rivermouth makes water quality genuinely questionable, so check pollution reports before paddling out, particularly after rain.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are consistent here, especially in summer when La Nord and La Gravière are beyond most surfers' comfort zone. The lineup draws a broad mix of European travellers and improvers, which keeps localism relatively low-key, but weekends can feel genuinely packed. Dawn patrol or weekday sessions between October and March give the best chance of space.

Access & Facilities

Park on Boulevard de la Grande Dune, south of the Front de Mer roundabout. Lifeguards are present seasonally. No major hazards reported, but treat the water with caution given estuary outflow nearby. Capbreton and central Hossegor are minutes away for food, board rental, and equipment.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Sud is shutting down on high tide, La Gravière to the north rewards experienced surfers with heavy, hollow peaks. For a change of scenery on smaller days, the Bourdaines and Estagnots beaches further north offer consistent peaks with similar sand-bottom character.
