Fast, powerful beachbreak beside a kilometer-long industrial wharf, La Salie marks the first surf stop south of the Bassin d'Arcachon on the Gironde-Landes border. Sandbars here shift with remarkable speed around two access points: the banks beside the wharf itself and a secondary cluster near the blockhaus further south. SW to NW swells in the 5-8ft range are the sweet spot, with easterly offshores sculpting hollow, punchy peaks at low to mid tide. The wharf outfall pipe discharges polluted foam into the lineup, swimming is officially banned, and strong currents demand respect. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: high when swell is running. Bring a shortboard and check water quality before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Despite a 20-minute walk from the carpark, this spot draws crowds, especially in summer. Localism is not a major issue, but the lineup can get competitive when banks are limited. Dawn patrol in autumn or spring sidesteps the worst of it.

Access & Facilities

Park at the carpark off the old Arcachon-Biscarosse road and walk 20 minutes south. No facilities on the beach. Watch what you leave in the car. Water quality is a genuine concern due to wharf discharge: check conditions before entering.

Nearby Alternatives

If La Salie's banks are closing out, the blockhaus peak further south offers more shape. When the swell drops flat, the 117m Dune du Pyla nearby is worth the detour.
