A reliable beach break on the Anglet stretch north of Sables d'Or, La Madrague throws up punchy lefts and rights that can get surprisingly hollow when the swell steps up. It works on NW to W swell from waist to head high, ideally with an E or ESE wind keeping faces clean. Low to three-quarter tide is the sweet spot as high tide tends to make it dumpy and shut-down. The large car park and straightforward beach access mean it fills up fast in summer, but weekday sessions in shoulder season can be genuinely uncrowded. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round, best September to November. Consistency: reliable in any swell under 2m before it starts closing out. Rips are present when swell builds, so identify a channel before paddling out and stay aware of drift during longer sessions.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe is generally relaxed and competitive rather than hostile. Summer weekends pack the lineup thanks to easy access and a big car park nearby. Shoulder season weekdays are significantly quieter. The localism is described as doable but the competitive edge increases with quality, so wave etiquette matters.

Access & Facilities

Direct beach access via a large car park at the Anglet beaches. Showers, facilities and food options are available in season. Water quality is generally clean but can degrade after heavy rain. Watch rips when swell builds.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Madrague is overwhelmed by size or crowds, the rest of the Anglet beach stretch offers multiple peaks worth checking. Biarritz breaks to the south provide reef and point options when the beach is blown out or too big.
