One of the heaviest beachbreaks in Europe detonates at the central beach of Hossegor, where a deep offshore canyon funnels raw Atlantic energy into sand-bottom pits that can hit 12ft on a solid NW or W swell. Easterly winds groom the faces, low tide sharpens the tubes but forecast services notes it fires across all tides. Size range is 3ft to 12ft, with the wave becoming genuinely dangerous above 8ft. This is an advanced-only lineup: a large committed local crew holds the peak, localism is real, and the shorebreak destroys boards with casual indifference. Bottom: sand. Season: October to February peak, rideable year-round. Consistency: reliable when Atlantic swell runs. Paddle out only if you can handle a proper hold-down, and expect the rips to work you hard between sets.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are manageable, weekends bring crowds. The local crew is large, experienced, and protective of the peak. Younger locals can be aggressive, both in and out of the water. Keep a low profile, surf within your ability, and do not paddle for waves you cannot make. Respect earns respect here, but pretending to belong when you cannot surf the wave will not end well.

Access & Facilities

Hossegor is well-serviced with parking near the dune access points, though prime spots fill early on good days. Food, water, and board repair are all available in town. The beach is clean. Hazards are the wave itself: heavy shorebreak, strong rips, and sand-charged barrels that break boards and hold surfers down.

Nearby Alternatives

La Nord and Les Culs Nus, both within the Hossegor stretch, offer slightly more forgiving peaks when La Graviere is closing out or overwhelmed with crowds. Capbreton, just south, provides sheltered options when NW swell goes overhead and the main beach becomes unmanageable.
